MIT Media Lab

The following are just some of the uses for RFID that inventors and engineers at the MIT Media Lab are exploring for the future:

Smart Cars

Smart city cars are shared among members of a community. These cars use RFID technology to automatically adapt themselves to the needs and preferences of each individual driver, for example by color, radio stations, toll-pay, seat/mirror positions, etc.

ID Tags

This identity card uses several RFID tags, each with an on/off switch, individually selectable by the user. This project explicitly balances privacy and user efficiency at the design phase of the technology, be providing user choice and greater identity autonomy. For more information, see: the project site.

Bus Line in Paris, France

The city of Paris and theMIT Media Lab collaborated to find ways to “reconceptualize” the city’s bus line so that it would be more convenient and secure for customers. This effort includes contactless identification being built into the environment for use by people and devices.
